In memory of the late Brian Wilson
The W Plate is Wombwell Karting’s most prestigious annual event, held in honour of Brian Wilson, a dedicated and passionate supporter of the club from 1970 until his untimely passing in 1992.
Brian’s journey in karting began when his 11-year-old son, Mike Wilson, first took to the track at Wombwell. Mike went on to achieve legendary status in the sport, moving to Italy at 18 to race for Birel and becoming a six-time World Karting Champion.
While Mike competed on the world stage, Brian remained a cornerstone of the Wombwell community, developing Premier Karts, providing vital trackside support, and serving tirelessly on the club committee to maintain and improve the circuit.
To honour Brian’s lasting impact, Wombwell Karting hosts the annual W Plate meeting, proudly supported by his wife Eileen and the Wilson family. As part of the event, Mike Wilson donated one of his World Championship trophies, which is awarded to the Driver of the Day, handpicked by the Wilson family.
Each class winner earns the right to carry the iconic ‘W Plate’ for the year when racing at Wombwell, a lasting tribute to both achievement on the track and the legacy of a man who helped shape the club we know today.
